Charitable lead trusts are trusts that are irrevocable and designed to provide income to a designated charity for a predetermined length of time. The funds for the charitable donations are provided for out of assets generated by the estate. At the end of the designated period the remaining funds are distributes among the beneficiaries named in the will. Charitable lead trusts are designed to help not only the charity but also the estate's assets during the period of the trust. The gift to the charities is valued for tax purposes at a discounted present value but in turn it also reduces the value of the estate which reduces the taxes paid on the estate. Charitable lead trusts are most always set up and configured by an estate planner or accountant who can advise on length of time as well as amount of the donation.
